5 Reasons You Must Do Classical Pilates

Reformer Pilates has become very popular. The Reformer is an amazing piece of Pilates equipment to use in your workout. But you are missing out if you only do Reformer Pilates. Joseph Pilates invented many more incredible pieces to create a strong and subtle body.

We give you 5 reasons why you should do Classical Pilates instead.

1. Create a better mind-body connection

The Pilates Reformer classes offered now are fusion based, using some of the elements of Pilates, but incorporating other movement techniques and methods. This means they move away from the true methodology of Pilates and can become more like HiiT training on an unstable surface.

Classical Pilates classes stay true to the Method that has proven itself to be ingenious, efficient and helping you find a better mind-body connection.

2. Build an efficient sequence

The Classical Pilates method has a sequence to the work, which was designed to move the body through a full range of movement. The sequence builds intelligently with foundational exercises at the beginning and more complex exercises as you gain strength and control.

Reformer classes always introduce a new movement which means you never learn the basics of each exercise and so you can never progress to a more advanced level.

3. Work with rigorously trained instructors

Classical teachers are required to go through a rigorous training program, with a minimum of 600 hours of training/apprenticeship, under teachers who are within the lineage of Joseph Pilates. They are trained on all the equipment and learn to teach Pilates as the Method it is intended to be.

Most Reformer Pilates teachers have not done an apprenticeship or finished a 600hr training. They are only able to teach on one apparatus and do not know how to use Pilates as a system.

4. Learn to flow with control

Classical Pilates is dynamic, controlled and flowing. The transitions between exercises are exercises in themselves and it’s important to keep the work one seamless, continuous flow - it’s fluid and efficient. it’s working with all these components that makes it a powerful system.

Reformer Classes tend to be about loud music, headset-wearing teachers and screaming cues. Since classes are usually big, there is no connection between the teacher and the client, resulting in lack of concentration and no efficiency.

5. Receive a bespoke workout tailored to your body

Each body is different and has various needs. A bespoke session is created using the different studio apparatus such as the Wunda Chair - aka the mini mat with springs, the three barrels - focussing on correcting the curvature of the spine, and the Ped-O-Pull - helping to attain correct posture and spinal flexibility.

Reformer Classes can only do one thing; Reformer. There is no room for a tailored workout which might be restricting your development. Also you can't articulate your spine over a barrel or work on your extension using the Wunda Chair.
